Establishment and Protocol

Initially launched at Akdeniz University, Third Age Universities were designed as educational programs aiming to promote active and positive aging among individuals aged 60 and above, enabling them to re-engage meaningfully in social life.

A protocol was signed on April 18, 2024, between Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University and the Ministry of Family and Social Services, General Directorate of Services for Persons with Disabilities and the Elderly, with the participation of TOGU Rector Prof. Dr. Fatih YILMAZ and General Director Elmaz Esra CECELİ. The protocol formalized collaboration in providing scientific, academic, research, and consultancy support—free of charge—by Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University for initiatives concerning elderly health, welfare, and care, within the scope of the 60+ Third Age University Project.

Following the protocol, preparations for infrastructure were initiated, and with the decision of the University Administrative Board dated July 3, 2024, the "Coordination Office of the Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Third Age University Project" was officially established. On July 12, 2024, the first project coordinator was appointed by our university’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Fatih YILMAZ.

By establishing the Third Age University, Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University has become one of the first ten universities in Turkey to implement this model.

With TOGU Third Age University, the goal of lifelong learning for the growing 60+ population in Turkey will be realized. At the same time, a localized model for aging—tailored to the social and cultural context of Tokat and its surrounding region—will be developed and implemented.
